Research Technical Elements Psychological Horror Part 2

In this blog I will continue talking about the technical elements of psychological horror.

                           Narrative and Plot Structure

The narrator is something that makes the psychological horror what they are. The narrator in psychological horror is unreliable and the narrators perception of reality is very distorted. Narrators in psychological horror films are distorted by mental illness, trauma, drugs or stuff like manipulation in these films the audience is in confusion and unable to trust any information seen or presented. They focus on the fear of the unknown in psychological horror films. They suggest stuff slightly they make the horror be more discreet and unknown. The plots focus mainly on that characters are doubting their own sanity and suspecting everyone around them. That creates a common narrative of mistrust and confusion because u can know what reliable and what is not. They show a loss of control most commonly the character loses control of everything around him and the fate seems inescapable. One more aspect is the uncanniness in psychological horror films they focus on making regular things twisted, disturbing and surreal

                                  Cinematography

The cinematography focuses on a variety of shots and angles all used to show details and emotion better. They use tight close ups to show anxiety, paranoia, or mental breakdown. Also off center framing to create uneasiness. They use empty spaces to show the isolation of the character and to give fear of some of the unknown in all that open empty space. "The Babadook" is a very good example of that camera work it worked the shadows and isolation amazingly. One of the most commonly used camera techniques of psychological horror is to use a handheld camera to create instability and realism which heavily adds to the horror of the film. They use slow tracking shots to bring fear of the unknown and while the character slowly approaches where he is going the viewer is in fear and discomfort of the unknown to come next. The last aspect of cinematography I will be talking about in this blog is the long takes they use the long takes to keep uncomfortably with no breaks of relief.

Research Technical Elements of Psychological Horror

In this blog i will be talking about the technical elements of Psychological horror and why they are used in psychological horror films.

Psychological horror has many complicated technical elements that make it what it is some examples of them are.

                                        Visual Style

A very common and important aspect of psychological horror is low-key lighting and shadows the lighting is very commonly darker and more eerie. The shadows are most commonly used to obscure information making the viewer imagine things in the dark and mess with the viewer mentally and emotionally. In the visual aspects of technical elements psychological horror focuses on a high amount of extreme close ups and POV shots. They use POV shots to show the emotion and perspective of characters the POV shot can be used to immerse the viewer into the horror and fear when POV shots are used that brings fear in am emotional aspect because of that the viewer can realize and feel as if they were the character and feel as if they are the character. Extreme close ups are used to show details in things about the character the extreme close ups can show emotion in a character that the viewer could not notice before. With the close ups and POVs a viewer can be immersed with more detail than before. "Halloween" is a psychological horror movie that uses these aspects very well.

                                 Setting and Atmosphere

The setting of psychological horror films are most commonly isolated areas in psychological films they isolate the main character very often. When they isolate the main character that is most commonly to bring the question of sanity to make the viewer question everything they see because the viewer and main character do not know what is real or just the main characters imagination. the setting or atmosphere of psychological horror is creepy and eerie it makes viewers always wonder what is in the dark or what is hidden that can not be seen. The setting is a important factor because it focuses on making everything you see add on to the scary aspect it makes sure everything you see around the main character makes you feel uneasy and at fear of the unknown. The atmosphere gets more eerie and creepy through out some psychological horror movies they slowly make everything the viewer sees increase in creepiness. A very popular and very good example of these technical elements is "The shining" it shows the eeriness, creepiness, and isolation of psychological horror films very good it is one of the most popular horror films.

Research Horror Sub genre: Psychological

In this blog I will be talking about the sub genre of horror that I picked which is Psychological horror.      I picked Psychological horror because that is the genre that interests me the most of horror, some of my favorite horror movies are Psychological horror movies. I am interested in the aspect of a horror movie that scares you through mental and emotional things instead of through jump scares and things of the sort.

Psychological horror is a unique style of film the psychological horror films mess with your mind, in psychological horror films you are left always questioning the main characters sanity and perception. In these films you are always left confused that you do not know what to believe. Some end up having a plot twist that shows you what you have been scared of or what has been going on but they always end with an ending that is unclear they do not let the viewer understand everything which leaves the viewer wondering and thinking things about the movie. That is what leaves the effect of Psychological horror stay after the movie has ended it leaves a lingering sense of uneasiness. One of the best Psychological horror films is "The silence of the lambs" that film is a film I personally love it is a unique movie that brought more fame and popularity in the psychological horror films.
